What You Need To Know About Wood Furniture Repairs

A lot of the higher priced pieces of wooden furniture today are quite striking and handsome pieces that feature ornate designs and bear the marks of superior craftsmanship. These pieces can be very impressive to look at and quite frankly a bit intimidating at times, especially when they happen to require a bit of repair.

For these more complicated pieces of wood furniture, it may be best to leave any repair work necessary in the hands of those who are more qualified to perform these particular tasks than you are. If you are not confident of your skill in woodworking it would be far better to limit any repair or restorative efforts to simpler pieces that you can easily manage. Of course if you have nerves of steel, long years of experience and the right set of wood working tools at your disposal, by all means go ahead and do the repairs yourself!

In any case, once you have decided to take the plunge and go for the considerable effort in repairing your well-loved pieces of furniture, you are in for an exciting project ahead of you that may be marked by some frustrating moments. It also has the potential to give you an immense feeling of satisfaction once the job is well done.

Your initial efforts will most likely be limited to addressing minor issues such as the repair of scratches and nicks, so we will focus our attention on those particular issues.

Shoe polish is a surprisingly helpful aid in scratch removal, and the fact that they are offered in many colors means that you can probably find one that is a perfect color match for that piece of furniture. A simple waxing job can do wonders this way.

Crayons or felt tip markers can also be used for this purpose, provided that you use them sparingly, especially if you are not sure how it will look like after application.

For scratches on darker areas of the wood, you can use a solution composed of iodine diluted with denatured alcohol. You can use a thin brush to gently apply this solution to the affected area.

Finally it is always a good idea to test any remedy on an inconspicuous area of the furniture in question first before turning to the main sections. This way you can avoid any irreversible damages that can cause an even larger and more unsightly appearance. Good luck!
