Oak and its purpose in furniture

When someone mentions “Oak”, a good number of people think of acorns. You can ask anyone - especially people from areas which tend to be colder than others - about oak trees and you can expect unique stories about it.

These trees, with their spirally arranged leaves, can be found in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It is mostly known for the high-quality wood one can get from it. Oak wood is known for its high resistance to insect infestations or fungal attacks, simply due to the fact that it is literally saturated with high amounts of the chemical substance called tannin. This chemical is such an important component in the production of leather that many think that the term “tanning leather” came from its name.

However, Oak wood is more known for its attractive grain markings. For its durability and sheer beauty, it is no wonder that it is definitely an option that many carpenters would take when it comes to making furniture. Oakwood furniture is guaranteed to be sturdy and less likely to wear out due to factors such as insects and fungus. Not only are pieces of Oakwood furniture used and purchased for their high durability, but in the hands of a skilled craftsman, they can be ageless works of art.

A whole house can be made with oak, inside and out. The options when it comes to Oakwood and furniture are virtually endless. One can make dining tables, rocking chairs, entertainment centers, shelves, and even fireplace mantles and toys from the wood of an Oak tree.

Again, Oakwood furniture is not only beautiful, but durable. If one sees a piece of furniture and finds out it is constructed from oak, he or she can rest easy, knowing that it will last for the next generations.
