Cedar furniture: Testing time

The Cedar tree is native to the western Himalayan Mountains and in many areas in the Mediterranean. When one passes by a tree, he or she can definitely be sure that that tree was a cedar if it basically dwarfed him or her while passing. These mighty trees can reach heights of up to 40 to 50, even 60 meters in some regions. They are closely related to fir trees in the sense that their cones are very similar in structure.

The leaves of a cedar are evergreen, and resemble needles that are 8 to 60 millimeters long, usually clustered together. The colors of cedars up close are beautifully diverse; their leaves can vary from pale blue-green to grass green.

Some think that its resin, or its secretion from its seeds, serves as a defense against squirrels, but a fine majority of people have known cedars more for its fine, scented wood. Records of the usage of cedar wood can be traced back to days of ancient history. King Solomon was known to contact King Hiram of Tyre to trade various natural resources for cedars, for which he was popularly known to obtain wood from for the construction of the original official Temple in Jerusalem.

It was used back then for such extravagant purposes, and today it is also well known in higher circles of furniture craftsmen. Usually craftsmen dealing with cedar do not need much practice to make a certain piece of furniture truly timeless in design – beds, dining sets, chests, dressers, drawers, and stools made from cedar are always regarded as high-quality. Homeowners usually take pride in possessing furniture made from cedar wood.

It is the durability and the scent of cedar wood which ensures that cedar furniture would be a definite hit in any home.
